Octo Laser Cut

I created my Octo Laser Cut design to push my design skills into a physical 3-D creation. So much of my work is either in a digital or print format and I wanted to create something that could be held, rotated and that had physical dimension.

Project Objective: Laser Cutter Design

Software Used: Illustrator

Equipment Used: Epilog Mini 40W Laser Cutter

Process

I designed four stackable layers in Illustrator. Next, Basswood was cut using an Epilog Mini 40W laser cutter. Each layer was then hand-painted with custom, acrylic colors except for the top layer. The top layer was sanded to show the original basswood giving a nice contrast to the dark red layers. Finally, each layer was secured using wood glue.

The video below show my Illustrator design, the laser cutter in action and shots of the unfinished layers.
